The Poas Volcano Lodge is situated in Costa Rica’s Central Valley outside the capital city of San José. Nestled between the Poás and Barva volcanoes at an elevation of 6,000 ft (1,900 m), this rural area of Costa Rica is stunningly beautiful and still within range of a major population center.
San José is an hour’s drive from this area. In the city, visitors will find all major services – car rentals, banks, hospitals, and more. It is, however, generally the places outside the city that travelers are attracted to. On clear days, visitors can enjoy undisturbed looks into the Poás Volcano’s active crater at the Poás Volcano National Park. Nearby, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens offer an excellent opportunity to explore forested trails and stand beside five impressive waterfalls. Other activities in this area include mountain bike riding and tours of the Doka Estate coffee plantation.
The Poás Volcano Lodge is an intimate lodge nestled into the pasturelands that lay beneath the Poás Volcano. The property has impressive views of the volcano and borders a protected subtropical cloud forest, where a network of trails allows guests to conveniently explore the outdoors. It shares the property with a working dairy farm, so guests can tour the farm and learn the ins-and-outs of dairy production.
The Lodge itself is a unique fusion of English, Welsh and American architecture. It’s built on different levels and has stone walls, wooden ceilings and dramatic arches that create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There’s a game room where guests can enjoy rounds of pool and a well-stocked library that’s perfect for reading. Every morning a simple and hearty breakfast is offered to guests in the restaurant. Other meals can be had here throughout the day and drinks can be ordered from the bar.
Accommodations consist of twelve charming bedrooms. Five rooms are located within the main lodge, while the remaining rooms are located in separate buildings. Designed with stone walls, wood paneling, and soft lighting, they feel rustic and cozy. All are clean and comfortable and include a private hot water bathroom and space heater. Each has private access to the garden.
