Located 60 km south of Puerto Limon is the 22,620 acre (9154 ha) Hitoy-Cerere Biological Reserve, a rugged and undeveloped park that offers few facilities despite its proximity to a major highway. Though the reserve offers no campsites or any other means of lodging, visitors can find plenty of accommodations in Puerto Limon and Cahuita, two nearby beach towns.
Hitoy-Cerere receives few annual visitors despite the fact that the park offers the ability to trek an unspoiled wilderness swarming with wildlife and natural streams. The park does, however, receive an astonishing amount of rainfall. The heavy rainfall, combined with uneven terrain, make this park somewhat difficult to negotiate.
North of Hitoy-Cerere lies Selva Bananito, a 2,350 acre (950 ha) reserve adjacent to a neighboring cattle ranch. A four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to navigate the dirt roads that lead to the reserve, but the park can also be reached via foot and horseback.
