Hotel Playa Negra offers oceanfront cabins next to Playa Negra's amazing reef break. Surfers will delight in the awesome waves off this pristine beach in Costa Rica's sunny and dry Guanacaste. Playa Negra is a caramel-colored beach, punctuated by rock outcroppings and tide pools. For those seeking escape from more developed tourist destinations in the Guanacaste region, this is just the spot.
Playa Negra is located south of another popular surfing break, Playa Avellanas. The area is accessed by a dirt road that requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle. During the rainy season (June-November) there may even be several river crossings involved. Between Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra, there is a small community in Lagartillo with a few spread-out sodas. However, by and large the major services beyond those offered by the area hotels are found in Tamarindo, 17 km north and a 45-minute drive away.
Upon arrival, however, guests can enjoy a laidback and relaxing environment of pure natural beauty. It is a great location for anyone seeking a remote and sunny beach experience. 100 meters south of Hotel Playa Negra, guests can find areas for swimming and boogie boarding with the family. There are also horseback riding opportunities, and tours that venture out to nearby national parks.
Hotel Playa Negra offers surf lessons, and both surfboard and boogie board rentals are available at the hotel's small Boutique-Surf Shop. Waves at Playa Negra are consistent. It is a popular swell with a rock bottom and famous right-hand barrels. However, there are numerous other breaks in the area, and the hotel can organize boat trips to surf spots such as Ollie's Point and Witch's Rock.
Hotel Playa Negra is made up of 10 brightly painted individual cabins with views of the beach and ocean. These round bungalows have a high thatched roof, numerous windows, and a concrete floor. The private cabins are spaced on a sunny lawn dotted with tropical flowers and greenery. The elliptical swimming pool has an adjacent shallow pool for children. At the large and open-air ranchero, guests will find a restaurant serving typical Costa Rican dishes and room for socializing near the ocean. It is a great place to watch the surfers on the main break.
