What Should I Bring for a Relaxing Vacation in Costa Rica?

If your vacation plan is to lounge on the beach and perhaps take a hike or two, then you can usually pack pretty light.

Costa Rica

Remember, it's always possible to do laundry at your hotel or at laundromats in most towns. Depending on the airline, domestic flights sometimes charge $1 for every pound of lugage over 25 lbs., so if you're taking flights within Costa Rica it's a good idea to limit your non-essential items, or be prepared to pay extra.

Slim down the contents of your wallet or purse. Leave behind any unnecessary credit or debit cards.

Essentials

Bring a passport and a driver's license, as well as a paper copy of each. Keep a contact list so you can have access to important phone numbers at all times.

Clothing

We recommend bringing the following for 10 days or more of travel:

  • Swimsuit

  • 1 or 2 pairs of long pants

  • 2 dress shirts

  • 3-4 t-shirts

  • Long sleeve shirt

  • 2 pairs of shorts

  • 10 pairs of underwear

  • 10 pairs of socks

  • Hat

  • Very light waterproof jacket

Shoes

  • Sandals or flip-flops

  • Walking or running shoes

  • Lightweight casual shoes

  • Water shoes (especially if you have adventure activities planned)

Activities

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Mosquito repellent

Costa Rica Domestic Flights & Booking Service

Costa Rica is about the size of West Virginia, but ground transportation can take many hours on its rough, windy, and mountainous roads. Depending on your travel route, domestic flights may be the most convenient and sensible option. Traveling between some destinations can take up to 8 hours by ground, while a domestic flight can cut that travel time to 35 minutes - a major time saver, especially if you have only a short time in Costa Rica.
