The El Mirador Trail is a scenic trail above Lake Atitlán. The trail leads from Godinez to Santa Catarina Palopó.
This trail should not be confused with the trail that leads to the Mayan site of El Mirador in Petén. These trails share the same name, but this one is above Lake Atitlán.
This trail begins in Godinez, which is set in the hills above Lake Atitlán, and ends in Santa Catarina Palopó. The trail is mellow and descends through pine forests, avocado plantations, and peach farms. You’ll enjoy good views of the lake as you hike and will reach the village of Santa Catarina Palopó in about 2.5 hours.
Santa Catarina Palopó is a lakeside village located 3 miles (5 km) east of Panajachel. The town extends into the hillsides above Lake Atitlán and has good places to buy handicrafts and textiles. Many villagers still wear traditional clothing.
If you plan on hiking the El Mirador Trail, plan on bringing hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, camera, water, and snacks.
