Cobán is located within the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The town itself is somewhat unremarkable, but it is set within a gorgeous area. The surrounding hillsides are filled alpine forests and coffee farms—this is a good place to go hiking, birding, or tour a coffee plantation. Several other natural attractions – including the limestone pools at Semuc Champey and the Laguín caves – are also nearby.
Montaña del Quetzal is set outside Cobán in an area that is between two protected subtropical rainforests—the Biotopo del Quetzal and the Sierra de Las Minas Biosphere Reserve. The hotel was founded in 1981 and is a pioneer in promoting ecotourism and conservation in the Cobán area. This is a good hotel for nature lovers and people who don’t mind simple accommodations.
Montaña del Quetzal’s rooms are rustic, clean and basic. All have a private bathroom with a hot water shower. The cabins, which can sleep between 1–4 people, also have a working fireplace. The fireplaces are stocked with a generous supply of wood and are especially nice during the cooler times of year.
The hotel has a restaurant that serves simple but tasty meals. The menu includes both national and international dishes. Options include chile relleno, fish filets, and several types of soup. All dishes are served with salad, rice and tortillas. The restaurant is open from 6:00 AM to 9 PM.
Montaña del Quetzal has a swimming pool that’s perfect for cooling off after a hike through the rainforest. The hotel also has foosball and Ping-Pong tables, as well as a small playground for children. Mountain bikes can be rented and ridden through the neighboring forest. The hotel grounds are lovely and planted with many orchids.
