Monterrico is a tranquil beach town along Guatemala’s Pacific coast. The town is actually set within the Biotopo Monterrico-Hawaii, a nature reserve that stretches some 13 miles along the coast. The reserve protects both the beach and nearby mangroves and is an important nesting site for sea turtles. Travelers often come here to see sea turtles nest and visit the Tortugario Monterrico, a sea turtle hatchery in the heart of town. Monterrico’s dark-sand beach is lovely and a great place to soak up sun and enjoy the scenery.

The Utz Tzaba Beach Hotel is set outside Monterrico along a quiet section of the coast. This makes it easy for travelers to really unwind and enjoy the beautiful beachside setting. In fact, the hotel’s name means “beautiful coast” in one of Guatemala’s Mayan languages.

With just 10 rooms and 4 bungalows, this hotel is fairly small. The grounds are tropical and well maintained, and the staff is friendly and accommodating.

The rooms are spacious and air-conditioned. Guests can choose regular or king-size beds, and enjoy comfortable bathrooms equipped with hot water showers and hair dryers. The hotel’s four bungalows provide all the comforts of home. Each has a living and dining room, a modern kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms. These are a wonderful option for families or groups of friends. The bungalows can sleep 3–6 people.

During the day guests can relax in Utz Tzaba’s large swimming pool. This refreshing pool overlooks the ocean and has a swim-up bar, allowing you to enjoy cold drinks and cool water throughout the heat of the day. There are also three Jacuzzis that guests can soak in when they’re feeling like warming back up. If a catnap is in order, head to one of the hotel’s many shaded hammocks—these provide an ideal place to relax and listen to the waves break.

The onsite restaurant serves a range of national and international food. Not surprisingly, seafood is a house specialty—try the whole grilled snapper, it’s delicious. The restaurant is set in an open-air cabana and has a nice, mellow vibe. The restaurant staff is prompt and attentive.
