Come explore the Mayan site of Takalik Abaj, which is notable for its Olmec-influenced structures.

Takalik Abaj is one of the oldest archeological sites in Guatemala. The site has Olmec-Maya style ruins and is set in the middle of a subtropical forest.

The site was first settled around 1800 BC and reached its prime between 800 BC and 200 AD. It was during this time that many of the sculptures, zoomorphs and monuments were likely carved.

In 2002, an intact royal grave was unearthed here and featured in the May 2004 issue of National Geographic.

The site extends over 2.5 square miles (6.5 sq km) along nine terraces. The Olmec influence can be seen primarily in potbellied figures. Tour participants will enjoy exploring the site's ceremonial center and marveling at the many intricately carved structures, including zoomorphs and large stone heads.
