Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang Temple is an extremely holy site, and is one of the six most holy destinations in Bali. The site is spread out over several levels, and in fact comprises six temples total. Pura Lempuyang is the official name of the temple at the summit, which offers a lofty view of Mount Agung in the distance, as well as the sea of forest that lays between.

The temple gate is called a candi bentar, and this style of split gate is a classic Javanese architecture. It also periodically serves as a background for elaborate Javanese ritual dances. The gates have become a popular attraction for Instagrammers, who often wait in line to get their picture of the sun coming through the gates. If you do want a picture, plan to arrive early, as visitors sometimes wait for two hours to get their chance to take a picture. It’s also best to plan your visit for the morning so you can hike during the cooler part of the day.

It takes quite a hike to get to the uppermost temple, and visitors should be ready for a steep hike if that’s their goal. And keep in mind – it’s considered bad luck to complain as you ascend the holy stairs! But it’s worth the hike, and many visitors say the temple behind the gate is an even more impressive sight. Either way, you’re sure to come away with incredible memories of this stunning landmark.
