Take a Think Global, Act Local interactive tour at the R.O.L.E. center. This tour looks to the future as its celebrates the past – while you’re here, you’ll learn about the center’s efforts to teach sustainable job skills to marginalized women, as well as some of the crafting traditions that they’re helping preserve.
Farming is a big part of life here, and the tour includes a stop to plant a few seeds yourself. Locals use herbs to make a traditional medicine called jamu, and the R.O.L.E representative will show you how it’s made. Pay attention, because there will be a quiz — your guide will see how well your group can identify herbs just by their smell. Your guide will also introduce you to the nitty-gritty details of waste management and composting.
Watch as local women nimbly weave fabric from naturally dyed textiles. The weaver will demonstrate how to make a simple scarf, and then give you a turn at the loom. After this hands-on experience, you’ll get to eat lunch at the on-site restaurant, where you'll eat a meal made from sustainably harvested ingredients.
Comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunglasses, and money for personal expenses.
