Want to get to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bagan quickly? Hop on a flight to Nyaung U Airport! Although it doesn't accept international flights yet, it's the best way to reach this amazing destination, and then make your way to other popular destinations such as Mandalay and Yangon.
This humble little airport is about to become something special. Undergoing renovations as of 2019, Nyaung U Airport is your gateway to the Bagan region's 3,600 stupas, temples, and monasteries (and related structures).
You will probably be flying into Nyaung U Airport from Magwe's Pakokku Airport (which is also undergoing renovations) until 'NYU' is able to accommodate direct flights, but once you're in Bagan, you can then use the airport as a domestic hub to continue your journey through Myanmar
Heads-up, due to Bagan receiving UNESCO World Heritage Site status, Nyaung U Airport now has to adjust to a significant increase in travelers. You may experience some growing pains until renovations are complete, but the rewards are more than worth it. This is why customer service is of the utmost importance at this airport – and why your patience and understanding is appreciated.
Insider's Tip: To stay under the airline's weight allowance, you can pack light. When you arrive – almost everything you need can be obtained from Nyaung U Market!
