The Northbound Transit Tour you described offers a fascinating and scenic journey through the Panama Canal, beginning at Flamenco Marina and aboard the Pacific Queen. Here's a brief breakdown of what the tour includes:
Departure from Flamenco Marina: The tour starts by boarding the Pacific Queen, where you'll set sail into the Pacific Ocean. You'll be able to admire the views of Panama City’s skyline and the Bay of Panama.
Miraflores Locks: The first stop is the Miraflores Locks, where the vessel is raised 18 meters above sea level in two stages. This is an impressive engineering feat, as the ship must navigate through this intricate process.
Miraflores Lake: After passing through Miraflores Locks, the ship enters Miraflores Lake, an artificial body of freshwater that separates the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks.
Pedro Miguel Locks: The next set of locks, the Pedro Miguel Locks, raises the vessel another 9 meters in one step. After this, you'll have a chance to see the new Centennial Bridge, which spans over the Canal.
Gailard Cut (Culebra Cut): Next, the ship enters the southern end of the Gailard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut), which was carved through the Continental Divide. This area is geologically significant and full of history, with the cut stretching for 13.7 kilometers. You'll be able to observe the continuous maintenance efforts to prevent landslides in this vulnerable area.
Disembarkation at Gamboa Dredging Division: The tour concludes at the Gamboa Dredging Division, where you will disembark and board motor coaches for a 45-minute ride back to Flamenco Marina.
