Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo) is the closest town to Machu Picchu. It’s primarily used as a place to stay while visiting the historic attraction, and many travelers will only spend a night or two here. The town is somewhat unattractive but the surroundings are stunning. There are a few good restaurants in Aguas Calientes, as well as thermal baths and a museum.
El MaPi Hotel is conveniently located in the center of Aguas Calientes. The buses that go to Machu Picchu leave near here and there are several restaurants close by. The hotel’s 90 rooms are clean, comfortable, and well lit. They have a simple, straightforward design and eco-friendly amenities. Rooms have either two twin beds or one king-size bed. The beds have 100% cotton sheets, down duvets, and hypoallergenic pillows—this makes it easy to fall asleep after a long day exploring Machu Picchu. Many rooms have nature-themed quotations – some by Aristotle or Isaac Newton – written on the walls above the beds.
A private bathroom with a hot water shower, hair dryer, bathrobes, and natural herbal amenities is included. All rooms also have a cable TV, telephone, and safe deposit box. Additionally, the “Superior Deluxe” rooms have a sitting area, full-length mirror, and a complimentary mini bar.
The restaurant has high ceilings, panoramic windows and an open layout. A complimentary breakfast buffet is served here every morning. The breakfast is made with organic and local ingredients whenever possible, and includes things like fruit smoothies and Belgian waffles. A lunch buffet is offered daily and dinner can be ordered from the à la carte menu—options include sandwiches, organic salads, homemade soups, turnovers, and Peruvian favorites. All items can be ordered to go and box lunches are available upon request.
Guests are invited to relax at the hotel’s bar/lounge. The bar has a wide selection of drinks, including piscos and organic wines. There is a daily happy hour from 5 to 7 PM and a number of snacks and tapas that can be ordered here. The lounge has a cable TV and is equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi.
El MaPi has a 24-hour computer room that’s stocked with two computers and a printer. Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered throughout the hotel, although some rooms don’t always have the strongest signal.
