At the Historical Center of Lima, you’ll see what’s left of the epicenter of Spanish control of the New World. Spanish power has long since ebbed away, but the streets of Lima still bear the majestic, imperial stamp of Spanish rule. On this nighttime tour, witness Lima lit up in the beautiful historic district, and the colorful fountains of the Parque Reserva.
In the Historical Center of Lima, the colonial style is still as imposing as ever. You’ll see grand examples of the palatial tastes of 17th century Spaniards outside the Lima Cathedral. Just like the Cathedral, the centuries-old Archbishop’s palace in Plaza Mayor functions as the headquarters for the Archbishop of Lima to this very day. Also located in Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace displays a visually striking blend of architectural styles. Built in the 16th century, this building underwent many renovations, at the hands of generations of subsequent rulers.
In nearby Plaza Mayor, Plaza San Martin has a giant bronze statue honoring José de San Martin, a general who played an instrumental role in gaining independence from the Spanish.
South of the Historic Center, the Fuentes de Lima – Fountains of Lima – burst from the ground in neon colors and in thin streams that create elaborate, seconds-long sculptures. These fountains look their best at night, projected with bright colors. This is a highly interactive attraction, and you’re welcome to walk under the pillars and arcs of fountain spray. It's a good idea to wear shoes that you don't mind getting a little wet.
