Trujillo is an old colonial city with a rich past. It has one of the country’s best collections of colonial homes and churches—walking around the town’s core is a good way to see some of these. There are several museums to visit, as well as a 17th-century church (Iglesia de La Merced) and an impressive palace that was built in the mid 19th century. Outside of town are massive adobe mounds that were once a religious complex and administrative center during the Moche empire (100–800 A.D.)
