Let Cesar know what you think!
This 2-day excursion is an overnight adventure through the Chimborazo Ecological Reserve, where you’ll see the rugged landscape of the Avenue of the Volcanoes. The extinct Chimborazo Volcano is the tallest of these peaks, at a staggering 20,702 feet (6,310 m) tall. It sits in the midst of a beautifully stark alpine forest.
During the first day of this tour, you’ll take a 5-hour drive from Quito to reach the Hermanos Carrel Refuge. From there, you’ll hike to Whymper’s Refuge. This is where you’ll find the cabin that will serve as your overnight accommodations. At 16,404 feet (5,000 m) above sea level, it is Ecuador’s highest-altitude lodging. You’ll have dinner and relax until 11 PM, when you’ll have a light meal and prepare for the second leg of your trip.
Day 2 begins promptly at midnight. After your very early breakfast, you’ll begin the 8 to 10-hour hike that will take you to the top of Chimborazo. At some point, the tour will break for a boxed lunch. The peek of this extinct volcano provides astounding views of the Andes. You’ll rest and take pictures before beginning your descent back to Whymper’s, where you’ll pack your gear. The last leg of the hike brings you back to Hermanos Carrel to meet your transportation and drive back to Quito.
Personal mountain gear—including warm clothes, a sleeping bag, sun glasses, and a head lamp—as well as money for tips, personal expenses, and meals at the hotel.
Private transportation, professional guides, accommodation in José Ribas Refuge, all meals during the hike, and park entrance fees.
