Karatu
Karatu’s bright red soil is a striking feature which dominates the surrounding landscape. In the past, the cool climate, fertile red soil, and rolling hills surrounding Karatu made the lands around Karatu popular with German colonial settlers and farmers. Today, Karatu still offers magnificent views of the Ngorongoro highlands and is the gateway for visitors heading to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.
More about Karatu
This bustling town is just 12 miles (20 km) south of Lodware Gate, the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From the Gate, it is less than 6 miles (10 km) to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Due to its close proximity to Ngorongoro Crater, many visitors opt to stay in one of the many lovely accommodations offered in Karatu rather than on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. Accommodations on the crater rim are limited and charge a premium rate. Lodges in Karatu offer better value for cost-conscious travellers.
Although most visitors only pass through Karatu, either on their way to or returning from Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, Karatu offers various local cultural activities to enhance the safari experience for visitors wanting a break from a busy sightseeing schedule. Take a tour of Karatu town and browse the local market, or visit an Iraqw village to
Visit a local brewery and try local beer, tour a coffee plantation and enjoy a cup of coffee or for the more adventurous - an ATV/quadbike bike tour through the country backroads. For those wanting to stretch out their legs, guided hikes are available to explore the Ngorongoro Highland Forest or try mountain biking along the country roads.
