This biking tour takes you throough 18.6 miles (30 km) of pristine Vietnamese countryside. Along the way, you’ll meet locals and learn about rural culture in northern Vietnam. You’ll also see demonstrations on traditional handicrafts, and get to know the people behind these simple but beautiful pieces of local art.
8:30 AM - Your guide picks you up at your Hanoi hotel. From there, you’ll drive northeast toward the Phu Lang Village, a village dedicated to showcasing traditional Vietnamese pottery.
10:00 AM - Arrive in Phu Lang, where your bike ride begins. The path takes you along the Cau River, eventually arriving at a pottery workshop. While you’re there, a potter will show you how locals have traditionally made pottery.
12:00 - Stop for lunch.
12:45 - Follow the path along the Duong River toward Dong Ho, where scenic villages punctuate the expanse of rice paddies.
2:00 PM - At the village of Dong Ho, you’ll learn about woodblock pictures. Woodblock printing is a UNESCO-recognized piece of Vietnam’s cultural heritage. You’ll get to visit with a family that has passed down the art of woodblock printing from generation to generation.
2:30 PM - Depart Dong Ho and go biking through the middle of a rice field – you’ll see farmers hard at work as you pedal by. The appearance of the fields depends on what time of year you visit. During the summer, the fields are a lush green, while early fall sees the fields turn gold with ripening rice.
3:15 PM - Arrive at Dau Pagoda, which has been rebuilt many times since its foundation in the 2nd century – it dates back to the earliest days of Mahayana Buddhism in Vietnam. Although the building you see today is much more recent, it contains some ancient pieces of Buddhist art.
3:45 PM - Leave the pagoda for the return trip to Hanoi.
4:45 PM - Arrive at your hotel in Hanoi.
