Arusha National Park’s most distinctive feature is Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania at 1,497 feet (4,566 metres) above sea level. The wildlife viewing in Arusha National Park is fairly modest compared to the other parks in the northern circuit, and its main charm is its beautiful scenery. For bird watchers, the park offers outstanding opportunities, with over 400 recorded species.
A game drive through Arusha National Park winds through montane forest inhabited by blue monkeys, large troops of baboons, and beautiful black and white Colobus monkeys. Your drive might also take you down to the plains where giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks graze.
Peer down into Ngurdoto Crater, to observe buffaloes and warthogs, and then speed toward the shores of the blue-green Momela Lakes, which attract thousands of flamingos, giving the lakeshore a pinkish hue. You can get a closer look at this flamingo habitat on a canoe tour of the lakes.
A visit to Arusha National Park is recommended at the beginning of your tour, as a safari appetizer before visiting the larger national parks. The park is located only 20 miles (35 km) from the city of Arusha and is easily visited in half a day.
